I like how Nathan brought up summer reading and how many of the students didn't even complete the assignment. They didn't do it because it was something that was being forced upon them. I myself was never a fan of summer reading either. Having to read a book that has no appeal to me then doing a project or writing a paper on it is miserable in my opinion. People don't like being told what to do- especially in college, when most of us are "on our own" for the first time. I also relate to wanting more community in the dorm but not really putting effort into it. I've passed on many activities that my dorm has done mostly because my schedule and personal life gets in the way.
While reading chapter 1 of The Mind at Work I saw how hard waitressing can be, and they may not get enough credit. They have to remember peoples' orders, always be friendly and hospitable, manage time well, continuously be checking up on all of the guests, and many other things. She mentioned that she watched other waitresses in order to learn how to waitress. I relate to that because one of the most effective ways for me to learn how to get better at a sport or anything of that nature is to watch others perform it. It lets you see what you're doing well, what to avoid doing, and what you need to improve on.
